SUMMER 2014 TENNIS PROGRAM FOR PLAYERS AT ALL LEVELS AND ALL AGES:
The Tennis sub-Committee of the recreation Committee has plans to involve men, women, children and families in a vibrant, fun-filled summer of tennis at Eastman. Tennis players from beginners to top competitive players (4.0 and higher ratings) will find something to get them on the courts, swinging their rackets. With the return of our very popular pro, Gary Conklin, you can have lessons and participate in drill sessions or in weekly team practices if you are an Eastman team member. Gary will improve your game no matter what level you are now and you will have fun doing it. Here are some of the summer tennis programs.
1) ROUND ROBINS:
Eastman offers men’s round robins on Monday, Wednesday (new this year), Friday and Saturday mornings at 7, 8:30 and 10:00. There is no charge for owners and summer tennis members. Women’s round robins are held on Monday, Friday and Saturday at the same times. round robins will begin Monday, June 2 and end the week before Labor day. On-line sign-up for round robins will begin May 1, although you can sign up anytime during the summer. (Check the Eastman home page for the link to the registration forms). you can indicate your start and ending dates, which round robins you want to play in, your preferred time and your estimate of your levee of play (to be confirmed by round robin coordinators). every effort is made to match you with three other players at a similar level of tennis ability to ensure a good game for all. you’ll receive a three-week schedule of your matches by e-mail every week.
2) ADULT TENNIS MIXER:
This event will be held Sunday, July 13 from 9 a.m. to noon followed by lunch cooked on Gary’s famous grill. It is open to all players 17 and older. Gary will assign players to foursomes at their level on a rotating basis. signup at south Cove will be announced. There is a $10 fee for lunch.
3) “LOOKING FOR A PARTNER” SIGN-UP SHEET:
A sign-up sheet will be posted at Gary’s tennis palace (lower courts) for players looking for a partner for singles or doubles. Individual players can contact each other to arrange matches.
4) FAMILY FUN TENNIS DAY:
This event will be held on Sunday, July 27 from 10 a.m. to noon, followed by lunch from Gary’s fabulous grill. It is open to all ages and levels of play. Gary will assign family members at a similar age and level to play in rotation. This is a great way for adults, children and families to connect with other tennis players during the summer. Members of the Tennis subcommittee will help out with the foursomes for kids. Fees are $10 for individual adults, $5 for individual children and $20 for the whole family (parents, kids and grandparents included). We will also be increasing outreach efforts to Eastman children and teens as well as those who live in surrounding communities. Currently, we offer a junior summer tennis membership for non-Eastman residents ages 22 and younger.
5) INTER-CLUB TEAM PLAY:
New this year is the establishment of the Eastman Community Tennis association (ECTA) to oversee our three competitive teams: Men’s a (4.0 and higher USTA ratings), Men’s B (3.5 and higher) and Women’s B (3.0 and higher). all teams practice with Gary one evening each week and usually have one match either at home or at another club. Fee for the summer is $60. This covers after-match snacks, indoor rentals at Our Court Tennis Club for rained out practices or matches, and an end- of-summer party. Try-outs for teams will be held in May (date and time to be announced). Current team captains are Jeff Adie (Men’s a), Larry Shulman (Men’s B), and Sharon Frank and Jackie Underhill (Women’s B).
