It was a cold, sunny, late February Tuesday, perfect for cross-country skiing. A Schwan Food Service truck, which had just made a local delivery, took a wrong turn onto what must have looked like a well-packed country road but was actually one of our superbly groomed ski trails, between numbers 1 and 3 Fairway Drive. GPS gone amuck? Blinding sunshine? Perfectly groomed trails masking as roads? The truck continued on its way down the hill and around the curve, until it was up to its axles in snow on the 5th Fairway.
The tow truck company made the decision not to try and retrieve the truck in the cold and dark, and left it until Wednesday morning, when an armada of huge tow trucks, equipment and people appeared on Fairway Drive to free it. After shoveling snow from beneath the truck, large pieces of plywood were placed beneath the wheels, and a front-end loader attempted to pull the truck back toward Fairway Drive. A larger piece of equipment was brought in to finish the job. Success at last! As it turned out, the driver was a new one, filling in for the regular on this route. “All’s well that ends well,” and Mike Gornnert and his crew did a fantastic job re-grooming the trail.
Just another ordinary day at Eastman.
