Arthur “Sonny” Demers finished 23 years of employment with the Eastman Community Association in September 2016. He worked yearround for Eastman after retiring from the Granite State Electric Company in 1993: in the Golf Pro Shop in the summer season and as our Nordic Director in the winter.
Sonny has a rich history as a skier and was once an Olympic hopeful for Nordic skiing. He taught downhill and Nordic skiing in the Upper Valley for years and was responsible for introducing hundreds, maybe thousands, of adults and children to the lifelong sport of skiing. To cap off his final season as a “ski pro,” Sonny was presented with the SkiNH Merrill Award, which recognizes those who have made an outstanding contribution to New Hampshire’s cross country skiing community.
On one of Sonny’s last mornings of work, golfers and skiers gathered together to form an arch of skis and golf clubs to welcome Sonny to work and show their appreciation. He was presented with life-long passes to Eastman Golf Links and the Eastman Cross Country Center, and two large containers overflowing with cards filled with stories of skiing, golfing, and good times for Sonny and his wife, Jean, to enjoy. Many community members also dropped off homemade cookies and other goodies to satisfy his sweet tooth.
Sonny’s smile will be missed, but we hope he takes full advantage of his passes and that we see him on the ski trails and golf links often.
