You see them around Eastman—hard at work on the roads, golf course or beaches, at events, or at their desks in the South Cove Activity Center or The Center at Eastman. They are the heart that makes the Eastman community hum and tick—the Eastman Community Association management team. When not tending to their varied duties on the Eastman campus, where do their minds and hearts go? Through an array of interview questions, Eastman Living discovered that they go to fjords, medieval cities, the Great Barrier Reef, backyard gardens, renowned gures like Patton and Ferris, and, of course, to loved ones. Now you hear from them—in their own words.

If you could spend a day with anyone in the world, who would it be and why?
I’d love to sit with General Patton. I’m a leadership junkie, so that is part of the reason I choose General Patton. Although he didn’t do well with politics, based on many interviews with the enlisted members he led, there is no doubt he understood the role of leader. One of my favorite quotes from General Patton is, “Never tell people how to do things; tell them what to do and they will surprise you with their ingenuity.” That is how I have approached leadership during my career.

If you could go anywhere in the world in the next 12 months, where would it be?
I would go to Tallinn, the capital of Estonia on the coast of the Baltic Sea. I’m fascinated with medieval architecture and culture, although I’m grateful I didn’t live in medieval times. Tallinn’s “Old Town” is known as one of the best preserved medieval cities in Europe. It has gothic churches, merchant houses, cobblestone streets, and large sections of the original wall that encircled the city. It even has a pharmacy that has operated continuously since 1422! I imagine a visit there is like stepping back in time 600 years. I look forward to visiting someday.

If you could spend a day with anyone in the world, who would it be and why?
Tim Ferriss. He sounds like an interesting person and someone that I would enjoy talking with about biohacking, longevity, and finding happiness.
Editor’s Note: Tim Ferris has been called “the best popular science writer in the English language” by the Christian Science Monitor and has received the American Institute Physics prize.

How do you like to spend your time when not working at Eastman?
When I’m not working, I love spending time with family and friends golfing, kayaking, eating at the Bistro, cross country skiing, or playing card or board games. When I’m alone, I read (I have an affinity for Jane Austen and related “fan fiction”), (re)watch movies (probably Harry Potter), or binge-watch Netflix (Grace & Frankie is a favorite).

How do you like to spend your time when not working at Eastman?
When I am not at Eastman you can often find me up to my elbows in dirt or flour. Lovely image, I know! I enjoy gardening and baking; they give me a feeling of accomplishment and also a neverending opportunity to try new things.

If you could travel anywhere in the world in the next 12 months, where would it be and why?
Iceland. The opportunity to explore an amazing landscape that includes fjords, volcanoes, valleys, rivers, waterfalls, and black-sand beaches and is almost untouched by civilization is very appealing to me. My dilemma would be deciding what season to go. In the summer, I imagine packing my tent, renting an all-terrain motorcycle and setting out on an amazing adventure. In the winter, I see myself cross country skiing and experiencing the northern lights against a backdrop of snow.

If you could spend a day with anyone in the world, who would it be and why?
If I could spend a day with anyone it would be my wife, Kellie, because she is the one person who matters the most to me in the entire world!

If you could go anywhere in the world in the next 12 months, where would it be?
It is hard to pick just one place in the world as there are many places I would like to visit for varying reasons. After much thought, I have chosen Australia as my traveling destination. There are numerous attractions that I would love to go see. Australia was the first place my mother and I talked about visiting together and it continues to be the place we dream of traveling to together. And who could resist those Australian accents? There are many things I would like to do in Australia: snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef; traveling the Great Ocean Road; kayaking on the Noosa River; and taking a ride on the Kuranda Scenic Railway. I would like to go to Kangaroo Island and Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary to see the wildlife in its natural habitat. . . . Finally, a trip to Australia would not be complete without learning how to throw a boomerang.
