This wonderful expedition was put together for Eastman’s 40th anniversary in 2011. It’s too much fun not to share again. You don’t need to do it in order; each stanza takes you to a different Eastman location, except for the ones in italic, which are all at the same spot.
For long-time Eastman Members, it shouldn’t be too hard to figure out where to go, but for newcomers we have put the answer key on Page 6.
While you’re out, take a selfie or other photo and send it to us at photos@eastmannh.org. If you have a favorite Eastman place that’s not included, send a verse along (to the same email) for us to share in the Eastman Highlights e-newsletter so others can enjoy it too.
Eastman Expedition
Welcome fellow hunters to the Eastman Expedition.
My name is LORNA LOON, and I will lead you on your mission.
Climb into your CARS or mount your BIKES or your FEET,
And prepare for a JOURNEY FREE OF ADMISSION.
1
Deep in the South End, in SPRINGFIELD Town,
You will find a place to play the NEWEST GAME aroun’.
With a PADDLE, a BALL and a COURT short on each side,
PICKLEBALL is its name; bring a friend and come down.
2
On a hot summer day, when you NEED A BREAK,
This beautiful WATERY SITE is easy to take.
Follow Road Round LAKE till you see the sign.
You soon will find the most SECLUDED BEACH on the lake.
3
HIKING this trail by foot is your best mode.
At its end is a pond, which SHARES ITS NAME with a road.
Much more SECLUDED than Eastman Lake,
NO POSTMAN has been seen here to lighten his load.
4
A car will not be your mode of TRANSPORTATION.
Crossing over the LAKE is your motivation.
Walking OVER IT, you are actually UNDER IT.
Beware! NO DIVING is permitted in this location.
5
It is here that community is in FULL BLOOM.
Eastman’s GREEN-THUMBED RESIDENTS need the extra room.
DIRT LOVERS may be found romping around.
This site is for PLANT LOVERS to groom.
6
This is a place which all enjoy YEAR ROUND,
Whether it is green GRASS OR SNOW covering the ground.
The greens become TRAILS and transform back again each season.
For LAND RECREATION it is here you are bound.
7
There’s more in this BUILDING you mustn’t forget.
For here on this floor is an OFFICE TO VET
Where TREE CUTTING APPS and ASSESSMENTS are left
And our General Manager KEN RYDER is met.
8
Now don’t leave this place without a visit UPSTAIRS,
Where “NORM” never comes, but everyone cares.
Their FOOD is scrumptious and their desserts are divine.
DINING room and PUB friendly, no putting on airs.
9
To PREVENT MILFOIL from making the lake its new home,
Come here with your BOAT before and after you roam.
This location helps to keep our LAKE HEALTHY and clean.
The WATER will remove anything from plant life to foam.
10
Our fearless FOUNDER, faithful and true,
Is HONORED here, without much ado.
The granite hewn ARCH stands out of the way
Quietly honoring EMIL the whole year through.
11
Once your BOAT has taken its necessary bath,
When you get here, you’ll be on the RIGHT PATH.
Your boat may enter the LAKE from this location.
Our LAKE HOSTS will inspect it and give you no wrath.
12
With his CLOTHES HANGING out for all to see,
He is NOT MODEST, but as shy as can be.
This Eastman resident does not follow the RULES,
But he is LOVED BY ALL and lives here for free.
13
This lovely green LAGOON will welcome you,
Although not the best place to SWIM, it is true.
It is DUCKS that make this place their home,
So please BE POLITE, and don’t say, “Ewww!”
14
If you continue on past the many ponds on this TRAIL
There is a place where SKIERS REST, so not to grow frail.
Once you find this YURT, you can turn and go out,
And you will be sure to FINISH this hunt without fail.
15
During the SUMMER when the heat has you beat,
You can stop here for an icy COLD TREAT.
This year with SOFT SERVE added as well,
Everyone’s CRAVINGS they are sure to meet.
