Through the strengths that define Eastman, we provide personal growth experiences for our youth.
“I love Eastman camp,” exclaims Landon. “It’s the best one I go to all summer! And I’ve been going since I was 4 years old!”
Landon is one of Daryl and Wayne Arsenault’s grandchildren who attends Eastman’s Summer Youth Programs (SYP) every year. They’re a pleasure to have at camp, along with the approximately 150 other campers who pass by the South Cove Member Services Desk at some point from July through mid-August.
If you visit South Cove Beach or South Cove Activity Center during those six weeks, you will see and hear kids of all ages enjoying themselves – playing games, doing crafts, swimming, kayaking, and participating in other fun-filled activities.
Eastman has come a long way with SYP programming and planning, which first developed more than 25 years ago, when “The Barn” was the hub of summer activity for Eastman youth. Today, we offer three different programs for kids ages 4 through 14.
Young campers (ages 4-5 who have not attended kindergarten) begin their SYP journey at the half-day Kid City, learning through swim time, games, and crafts about their community, ecology and Eastman Lake, and how to work as a team.
As they move on to All Day Gang (ages 6-11; first through fifth grades), they build on this foundation of teamwork while also broadening their horizons. All Day Gang campers have the opportunity to participate in off-site field trips and additional teambuilding activities.
Kid City and All Day Gang often share themes, but activities are age appropriate. This year’s programs range from recycled crafts and talent shows including performances from local organizations, to outer space and the alwayspopular water week.
Finally, campers move up to the Adventure Program (ages 12-14; sixth through eighth grades), where curriculum includes vigorous activities, such as hiking and kayaking, and learning consideration for others and the environment. The goals of the Adventure Program are for participants to learn problem solving, team building, and leadership skills through outdoor initiatives. Adventure Program campers are encouraged to expand their knowledge of the natural world while challenging themselves in a safe and encouraging environment. This year’s “AP” themes include Farm-to-Fork, Survivor, and Vertical Endeavors.
