It has been a long time since I’ve edited a publication, going back to The Bow Times before I moved to Eastman in 1995. That weekly newspaper covered three towns—town and school government, sports, community features, etc.—but it was still a lot less work than editing Eastman Living! Or maybe it’s like childbirth and I don’t recall all the work involved.
Before we go any further, join me in thanking Judi Platt, who served as Eastman Living’s editor since Fall 2015 and helped us transition from a 48-page quarterly magazine to a 64-page biannual publication. She spent an amazing amount of time recruiting writers and photographers, editing articles, selecting photos, writing headlines, and working on layout and graphics with Kiwi Design. In her “spare” time, she helped assemble a “Contributor’s Toolkit,” including submission guidelines for writers and a stylesheet that ensures consistent abbreviations, punctuation, and more. Her diligence and artistic eye have brought this magazine far. I hope we can continue in that vein.
In this issue, you’ll hear about Roscoe’s adventure, a Vermont steampunk festival, a busy volunteer, the designing of our main entrance (including what some people call “the totem pole”), and where and how to get the freshest local produce. A new writer teaches us about teletherapy, a veteran writer tells us what’s NOT out there, and we welcome a long-time owner as a member of the Eastman Recreation staff.
As always, we welcome comments, suggestions, article ideas, and offers to join our troupe of volunteer writers and photographers: EastmanLiving@EastmanNH.org.
Now, read ON!
