Guinea pigs Charles and Sydney with their mother
What do you do after you adopt a couple of mischievous guinea pigs, and want to help the shelter where you got them? If you’re me, you write a book about them. Austin Macauley Publishers recently published my book A Tale of Two Guinea Pigs, with my proceeds going to the Guinea Pig Sanctuary in Salisbury, MA.
The book follows the adventures of intrepid guinea pigs Sydney and Charles. Sydney is the braver one who sacrifices his own feelings to help Charles survive the worst of times. Charles gives Sydney’s life purpose and shares the best of times with his big brother. Children will be sad when the baby piggies are taken away from their mother; horrified at their neglect by the Knitting Needle; and relieved by their rescues—first by their Guardian Angel and then by the Nice Lady who takes them to their Forever Home. Sydney and Charles patiently train their new owner, who eventually learns exactly what Sydney and Charles need to be happy.
I respectfully borrowed from Charles Dickens. I hope that when children who read my book grow up and read Dickens’ masterpiece A Tale of Two Cities, they picture Sydney Carton and Charles Darnay as guinea pigs and Lucie Manette as a huge pink bunny. I hope they laugh their heads off. The book is available for purchase online through Austin Macauley Publishers or Amazon.
